The present inventors discovered that oligonucleotides which suppress midkine expression and antibodies which suppress midkine activity can be used to prevent post-surgical intraperitoneal adhesions.

A method for preventing post-laparotomy adhesions in a laparotomy subject by administering to said subject a compound that suppresses midkine gene expression wherein said compound is an antisense nucleic acid molecule, an expression construct for an antisense RNA molecule, an siRNA or an expression construct for an siRNA,
wherein the antisense nucleic acid is complementary to midkine mRNA; and wherein the siRNA forms a RISC complex that targets midkine mRNA.
