PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a more practical method for producing ceria-zirconia composite oxide material.SOLUTION: The method includes: a step to heat the raw material liquid that contains water, cerium ions, zirconium ions, and a hydroxy group containing compound containing at least two hydroxy groups, and that is alkaline, and carry out the hydrothermal reaction to obtain a composite between ceria-zirconia composite oxide and the hydroxy group containing compound; a step to calcinate the composite under a reductive atmosphere to obtain a first calcinated body comprising a ceria-zirconia composite oxide phase and a carbide phase; and a step to calcinate the first calcinated body under an oxidative atmosphere to remove the carbide phase in the first calcinated body and obtain a second calcinated body consisting mainly of ceria-zirconia composite oxide phase.
