PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an information acquisition device capable of making the size of a reference zone appropriate while securing uniqueness of a dot included in the reference zone, and an article detection apparatus using the device.SOLUTION: An information acquisition device acquires distance information on the basis of a reference image picked up when a dot pattern is irradiated on a reference surface and an actual measurement image picked up by a CMOS image sensor at an actual measurement. The dot pattern is constituted by combining plural dot units U1-U4 having mutually different dot distribution. The dot units U1-U4 are arranged in a unit group G so that only one combination of three dot units mutually adjacent in an X-axis direction exists in the unit group G. Further a dot pattern is constituted by arranging unit groups G. A segment zone is set at a size including three combinations of dot units.
