This control device for an internal combustion engine is equipped with: a NOx sensor (22) arranged in an exhaust passage (16); a basic soot calculation unit (62) that calculates a basic soot exhaust amount as a value in accordance with the operating state of the internal combustion engine (10); and a NOx correction coefficient calculation unit (74) that calculates a NOx correction coefficient based on a NOx value obtained by dividing the NOx sensor value by an estimated NOx median value, with this correction coefficient being for the purpose of updating the basic soot exhaust amount.
