The switching device (1) has a switching element (2) for shifting of gears. The switching element is rotated or axially slid with respect to a housing portion (4). The laying of switched gears or laying of the neutral position is blocked by a gear locking device. The forward gear switching position of the switching element is blocked by the gear locking device. An independent claim is included for a method for operating switching device.
