[Also in Group XXIX] A control valve for fluidoperated power steering comprises two relatively rotatable valve elements 34, 36 within a casing 38 and with adjacent end faces, a pair of pockets in the end face of element 36-only one pocket 70 being shown-communicating respectively with a pressure passage 80 and an exhaust passage 88 in the casing, a pocket in end face of element 34 leading to an outlet e.g. 98 or 106, and connectable to either pocket of the pair of pockets, and a resilient connection e.g. torsion rod 46, between the elements. Rotation in either direction of steering shaft 44, limited by a pin and socket connection 110, 112 between the elements, turns element 36 from a neutral position in which negative lap exists between pairs of supply and exhaust ports in the element 36 and pairs of outlet ports in element 34 leading to either side of piston 14 respectively via passages 98, 106, and produces a pressure differential across the piston which moves to effect steering through tooth 18 and shaft 20 and produce a follow up rotation of element 34 via the worm 24 and recirculatory balls 26. The torsion bar 46 produces a seal proportion to the steering resistance. The outlets in element 34 may lead to one side of a single acting piston. In an alternative embodiment, supply pressure acts on a disc pressing the valve elements together.</p>
