A control device for a line sensor that captures an image of a paper sheet being transported is configured from: light sources for illuminating the paper sheet with light; a light source control unit for controlling the turning on and off of the light sources; and a sensor control unit that reads signals from the sensor with a predetermined timing when the light sources are on and when they are off while a paper sheet passes through the line sensor imaging position, and that converts only the signals that have been read and have been obtained while the light sources are on into data for forming an image of a paper sheet.
