PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a settling tank where the quality of treated water is excellent and operation is stable for a long period and an operation method of the same.SOLUTION: A settling tank 1 comprises: a cylindrical tank body 2 whose axis direction is a vertical direction; a distributor 10 set at a lower part (vicinity of bottom) in the tank body 2; an outflow port 3 located at the intermediate section of the side surface of the tank body 2 or a slightly upper position than the intermediate section; a receiving tank 4 communicating in the tank body 2 via the outflow port 3; an agitator 5 set at the tank body 2; a trough 6 for discharging treated water located at an upper part in the tank body 2; a sludge discharge port 7 for discharging concentrated sludge from the lower part of the receiving tank 4; and the like. An agitating body 5c is located at the lower side of the distributor 10.
