[Also in Group XIX] Data for printing received from a computor on lines 1 in serial-parallel form is entered into a matrix 4 of magnetic cores forming a buffer store for one line of print, by a decoder 2 which produces for each data character a half-write signal on an appropriate row line 3, and a layout selector 5 which energizes " print position " lines 6 with halfwrite pulses in sequence. The sequence produced by unit 5 may be a single left-to-right sequence if the data is to be printed in the order it is received from the computor, or a desired sequence may be preset by choice of a plug-in unit which provides an appropriate set of interconnections between magnetic cores forming a shift register. When a line of print has been written into the matrix, a shift register 7 reads out the rows in turn in synchronism with the rotation of a type-wheel printer (i.e. a cylinder having like characters on each of a number of generators) so that (for example) all " a "s are printed by signals on line 9 operating print hammer amplifiers 10 as the top row is read out, then all " b "s as the second row is read out, and so on. |
