<p>This organic EL element is equipped, in this order on a substrate, with an anode, an organic layer containing a light-emitting layer, a cathode, a low-refractive-index layer, and a metal layer, and is configured so as to discharge light from the anode-side to the exterior. The refractive index of the low-refractive-index layer is lower than that of the organic layer. The anode is equipped with a high-refractive-index layer on the surface thereof opposite the organic layer. The high-refractive-index layer has a higher refractive index than that of the substrate, comprises a material having a higher refractive index than that of the low-refractive-index layer, and is provided with a layer-shaped section and a plurality of projections which are convex toward the side thereof opposite the anode. Of the cross-sections perpendicular to the anode, the cross-sectional shape of the cross-section of the projections which yields the maximum cross-sectional height and the minimum cross-sectional base length forms a polygon provided with a base parallel to the anode, and two base angles. These two base angles are both acute angles, this polygon has two angled sides connected to the base and sandwiching the two base angles, and the projections are of a configuration having angled surfaces containing the angled sides within the planes thereof.</p> |
