Uranium values are extracted from oxidic material by leaching with a kerosene solution of a dialkyl phosphate to dissolve uranium oxides, scrubbing the leach liquor with an aqueous mineral acid solution, and thereafter extracting the dissolved uranium oxides from the scrubbed leach liquor with hydrochloric acid of about 12 M concentration. The scrubbing acid, which may be sulphuric, hydrochloric or nitric acid is preferably of 0.5 molar strength; it serves to remove dissolved vanadium from the organic phase. Suitable dialkyl phosphates are di - 2 - ethylhexyl -, di - iso - octyl -, and di-n-butyl acid phosphates. The uranium can be recovered as U3O8 from the final hydrochloric acid solution by evaporation and calcining.
|
