840,417. Water-activatable adhesive coated sheet materials. GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO. May 23, 1958 [June 20, 1957], No. 16716/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 140. Water-activatable adhesive coated laminated plastic sheet material having a layer of compounded polyvinyl chloride and a backing layer of matted fibres is made by wetting the backing layer, applying to the wet surface a dry adhesive mixture containing dry non-tacky wateractivatable adhesive particles and porous fibrous particles to form an adhesive layer and drying the adhesive layer to provide the sheet material with an adhesive layer that can be applied to surfaces by wetting the adhesive layer and applying it to a surface. The polyvinyl chloride layer preferably contains a major proportion of polyvinyl chloride copolymerized with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride. The fibrous backing layer may be a felted cellulose, rubberimpregnated paper or textile, or wood fibres treated with rubber or resin latex. The dry adhesive may be lignin (or casein or starch derived from corn, wheat, potatoes or rye), together with asbestos and a clay filler. The asbestos may be replaced by other porous fibrous materials such as cotton, ramie and wool.
|
