Continuously captured multiple images A and B are obtained, and image shift between the images A and B is detected while the images are in a mosaic image stage. A pixel extraction section performs a pixel shift for the images A and B relative to each other and extracts pixels having the same color among pixels which overlap between the images A and B for which the pixel shift has been performed, and an evaluation value calculation section calculates an evaluation value which indicates a degree of match between the pixel-shifted images A and B on the basis of respective image values of the corresponding extracted pixels. An image shift detection section detects image shift which achieves the maximum degree of match between the images A and B on the basis of the calculated evaluation value and information related to the pixel shift.
