Anthelmintic compositions in unit dosage form comprise a non-toxic carrier and a compound of general formula <FORM:0904956/VI/1> wherein R is a cationic radical formed from a base strong enough to form a salt with nitrophenol or a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl, aroyl, lower alkyl substituted carbamoyl, lower alkanoyl, lower alkylsulphonyl, arysulphonyl or a lower alkyl thiophosphono group and wherein position (1) is substituted by a halogen atom or lower alkyl group, positions (2) and (3) are unsubstituted or are substituted by halogen atoms and position (4) is substituted by a halogen atom or a nitro or lower alkyl group, the term "lower" denoting radicals containing from 1-6 carbon atoms, the concentration of nitrophenol derivative being from 0.001 to 1% by weight of the composition. The compositions may be in forms suitable for injection or for oral administration, e.g. as tablets, capsules or mixed with feedstuffs. Specific examples given include 2,6-diiodo-4-nitrophenol and the corresponding dibromo- and dichloro-compounds; 2,6-dichloro (and dibromo)-4-nitroanisole; 2,3,5,6 - tetrachloro - 4 - nitroanisole and 2,6-dichloro-4-nitrophenolacetate. |
