Vinyl chloride polymers are softened by the addition of 5 to 40 wt. % of a dibenzylbenzene <FORM:0841805/IV(a)/1> where R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 each represent hydrogen or an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radical. Polymers mentioned are homopolymers and copolymers of preponderent amounts of vinyl chloride with other polymerizable compounds e.g. vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride and acrylonitrile. Groups R mentioned are C1-4 alkyl and cyclohexyl radicals. Specified dibenzylbenzenes are dibenzylbenzene, dibenzyltoluene, tribenzyltoluene, dixylylene, their alkyl, cycloalkyl and aralkyl derivatives, and mixtures e.g. those obtained by the process of Specification 824,878. They may be mixed with conventional softeners, especially esters, preferably in a ratio between 95:5 and 50:50. Examples are given of the following compositions:-(i) polyvinyl chloride and dibenzyltoluene; (ii) polyvinyl chloride, dioctylphthalate and dixylylxylene; and (iii) polyvinyl chloride, dioctyl phthalate and a mixture of dibenxyltoluene and benzyl-dibenzyl toluene. |
