<p>Ethylene is polymerized with the aid of a Ziegler catalyst which is prepared by contacting the catalyst components with stirring at a temperature of from -10 DEG to -100 DEG C., the stirring being continued whilst the temperature rises to room temperature. The components may be mixed in any order preferably in solution in an inert hydrocarbon solvent, e.g. heptane, and may be mixed in the presence of an inert carrier such as pulverised polyethylene. The catalyst components may be titanium tetrachloride, vanadium tetrachloride, zirconium tetrachloride and aluminium tri-isobutyl, diethyl hydride or triethyl and the ratio of aluminium compound to transition metal compound may be from 0,3 to 3. In the examples ethylene is polymerized in solution in heptane at 5 atmospheres pressure to form granules of molecular weight below 100,000.ALSO:A Ziegler catalyst is prepared by contacting the catalyst components with stirring at a temperature of from -10 DEG to -100 DEG C., the stirring being continued whilst the temperature rises to room temperature.
