A control unit reduces the power supplied to a high-voltage discharge lamp when an output voltage or an output current to the high-voltage discharge lamp measured by a measuring unit is within an abnormal range. A drive unit for driving a switching element is provided with, in order to turn on a high-potential switching element when a low-potential switching element is turned off, a capacitor for supplying the control electrode of the switching element with the needed electric charge. A discharge lamp lighting device is provided with a determination period for the control unit to determine the presence or absence of an abnormality from the measured value measured by the measuring unit while operating the DC/DC convertor and a DC/AC inverter after charging of the capacitor is started before a DC/DC converter starts to operate when activating the high-voltage discharge lamp and the charging of the capacitor is completed.
