PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new data compression technique that is not based on a frequency analysis.SOLUTION: A data compression/expansion apparatus divides a data string comprising a sequence of a plurality of pieces of data in a frequency domain into a plurality of blocks on the basis of a required bit number required to express a data value. Specifically, the data compression/expansion apparatus includes the next data in the current block if the required bit number of the next data is equal to the bit number of each piece of data in the current block, and otherwise, determines whether or not to divide the next data from the current block by a division determination process. If the next data is determined not to be divided, the next data is included in the current block, and otherwise, the next data is included in the next block. Unnecessary bits of each piece of data in the generated block are deleted to leave necessary bits, so that each block is compressed. |
