PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrophoresis device that reflects input of characters into a display image at higher speed, and also to provide a technique for driving the device. SOLUTION: The electrophoresis device includes: a plurality of first electrodes (111); second electrodes (110) oppositely arranged to the plurality of first electrodes; and an electrophoresis material layer (112) arranged between the plurality of first electrodes and the second electrodes. The second electrodes have the plurality of openings (114) that are discretely arranged, and each of the plurality of openings is arranged so that an area viewed from above is smaller than that of each of the plurality of first electrodes.
