PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of operating a coke oven which can operate the coke oven without greatly deteriorating coal charging efficiency even when one of two coal charging cars has stopped working. SOLUTION: In producing coke by charging coal into a carbonization chamber of a coke oven 21 from a coal charging car 16 which travels above the oven top part of a coke oven 21, a reserve coal charging car 20 is arranged in the neighborhood of the oven end of the coke oven 21 and the coke oven 21 is operated by replacing the disabled coal charging car 16 with the reserve coal charging car 20.
