<PICT:0850896/IV(a)/1> Resin is removed from a resiniferous aqueous suspension of wood pulp by passing the suspension through at least one whirling-chamber spray nozzle to form a conically diverging spray of small droplets of the suspension and directing the spray against a flat strainer surface spaced from the spray nozzle with the central axis of the spray directed perpendicular to the strainer surface. As shown, a resiniferous wood pulp suspension containing 0,91% dry spruce sulphate pulp is supplied from a gravity tank at a pressure of 5 metres water column through a hose 9 and pipe 8 at a rate of 400 litres per minute to a whirling-chamber spray nozzle 7 in a chamber 2 to form a conically diverging spray 10 which impinges on a flat 0,2 mm. mesh wire screen dividing the chamber 2 from a second chamber 4. After slacking off the grub screw 12 the distance between the nozzle and the screen may be adjusted, and in the example the optimum is found to be 20 to 22 cm., within which range 50% of the resin in the pulp is removed by passing through the screen with about 1,5% of the total fibres, the deresinified pulp not passing through the screen and being discharged from the chamber 2 through the pipe 3. |
