A needle guard assembly 120 has a housing 122 which can engage with a catheter hub (4, figure 4) and through which a needle 34 can extend. A needle guard 140 within the housing incorporates a needle trap 142 biased by a resilient arm 150. With the needle extended the needle trap is held to one side of the needle; when the needle is retracted the resilient arm pushes the trap laterally to block any subsequent forward movement of the needle or access to it (figure 5a). The same motion extends a coupling arm 160 radially outwards to release the housing from the catheter hub. The rear of the housing has an aperture 170 for passage of the needle. Preferably, a crimp 172 on the needle will not pass this aperture and so limits rearward movement of the needle. The aperture may be reinforced by a metal washer 174. Also disclosed is a catheter hub having a dual vale arrangement. |
