Growth stimulating feeds for poultry and for domestic and farm animals contain an ester indole alkaloid of plants of the Apocyanaceal family having a sedative action and/or another ester alkaloid of a corresponding indole oxyacid having a sedative action. The feeds may contain 0,000005-0,001% of the alkaloid. The alkaloids are exemplified by reserpine, deserpidine, rescinnamine, raunescine, and nontoxic acid addition salts thereof. Ground crude root material and pure or impure extracts and mother liquors may be used; a poultry feed may, for example, contain, per kg., 0,05-10 pigeon units of mother liquor after crystallizing and separating reserpine from the weakly basic alkaloid plant fraction.
