853,838. Inserting terminal stock in circuit boards; shearing. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. Aug. 18, 1959 [Sept. 2, 1958], No. 28233/59. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of securing terminals in the form of short lengths of wire or the like in a printed circuit board comprises feeding a supply of terminal stock material, severing a predetermined length of the material and feeding it to an inserter which pushes it through a board supported beneath. A machine for carrying out the method comprises a base 23 supporting a column 11 which carries a terminal stock reel 13 and a platform 27 on which are mounted the stock feeding, shearing and inserting devices. A Z- shaped frame 37 bolted to the platform 27 carries a fluid motor 69 coupled by a rod 71 to a member 73 comprising a body 77 with upper and lower collars 75, 79. Depending from the member 73 is a push-rod 81 carrying an adjustable stop 87 which supports a collet member 85. Terminal stock is fed through a bush 123 in the platform 27 by a reciprocable clutch member 49 having two ball elements 51 for gripping the stock which is held against upward movement by a fixed clutch member 47. On a downward movement of the member 73, the collar 75 engages and pushes down the member 49 to feed a predetermined length of stock through the bush 123 into a box 63. At the same time the collet descends under the action of a spring 89 until the stop 87 abuts a bushing 99. The push-rod 81 continues to descend and moves an elongated finger 83 down through the collet to contact a piece of cut-off terminal stock and push it out of the collet and into a circuit board 20 which at this time is supported on an apertured anvil 109 carried by the ram of a fluid motor 105. After insertion, rotors 69 and 105 are reversed. On upward movement of the member 73, its lower collar 79 moves clutch 49 upwards and also engages a valve 125 to actuate a horizontally disposed fluid motor 57. This moves a cutter 61 which shears off the piece of stock within the box 63 and carries it to the end of the box where it drops into a slot 95 in the collet ready for insertion in a board on the next descent of the member 73. |
