The invention comprises 1-acyloxy-6-keto-7-(g -chloro - 2 - butenyl)-9a-methyl-3a,3b,4,5,8,9-hexahydro - cyclopentano-[2,1-c]-naphthalenes of the general formula <FORM:0914735/IV (b)/1> where -OAc represents an acyloxy radical and a process for the preparation thereof in which a 1 - acyloxy - 6 - keto - 7 - (g -chloro-2-butenyl) - 9a - methyl - 3a,4,5,7,8,9-hexahydro-cyclopentano-[2,1-c]-naphthalene of the general formula <FORM:0914735/IV (b)/2> where -OAc represents an appropriate acyloxy radical is isomerized by treatment with a non-hydrolytic acid reagent. The products are converted to the corresponding 7-(g -ketobutyl) compounds by hydrolysis. Acet- and benzoyloxy are the preferred acyloxy groups amongst those listed. Acid reagents for use in the process include anhydrous hydrogen chloride, nitric and sulphuric acid derivatives, tosyl and mesyl acids. Examples are furnished.
