Apparatus for detecting and recording defects in a moving strip S, comprises a plurality of inspection devices 10, 12, 14, 16 located along the path of travel of the strip, an elongated tape 34 moving at a speed having a known relationship with the speed of the strip S, a plurality of marking devices 42-50 associated one with each of the inspection devices, the marking devices 42-50 being spaced apart transversely of the tape 34, each being actuated upon detection of a defect by the corresponding inspection device. As shown, metal strip S is inspected for defects by a pin-hole detector 10, a thickness gauge 12, a coating thickness gauge 14 and an electronic surface scanner 16, each of which causes a mark to be applied on the tape 34, if a defect is detected, the marks being spaced transversely of the tape. In addition, a workman visually inspects the strip S and operates a foot switch 60 if he sees any defects. The total length of strip is indicated by a counter 24 operated by a cam 22 on the shaft of a roller 4 The length of strip having defects is also indicated by counters operated when a defect is present.
