A fastening-device includes a hollow receptacle 26 adapted to receive a threaded stud 24 so that the receptacle and stud have a common axis when operatively assembled, there being in the receptacle movable-opposedjaws 35 which are with concave-faces directed towards the central-axis, the faces presenting screw-threads for co-operation with screwthreads on the stud, the jaws and the receptacle having corresponding inclined segmental cylindrical-surfaces of equal radius to one another, in full surface-to-surface contact. As shown, the device is used to clamp together two panels 20, 21. The receptacle 26 is predominantly circular in plan view but with chordal lands 29 which form opposed inclined part-cylindrical channels 32 between the lands, for the jaws 35. The outer surfaces 37, 38, of the jaws engage channels 32 and the lands 29 respectively, while the confronting faces of the jaws are also part-cylindrical and parallel to the major-axis of the receptacle. Also, the jaws 35 are biased by a spring 46 towards one-another and towards the open-end of the receptacle, the degree of movement being limited by a guide-cylinder 43 slidable in a cap 47 enclosing the receptacle 26 and the spring 46. In plan-view, the threads and the jaws are crescent-shaped, the maximum-depth of the threads being equal to the depths of the studthreads. The threads of the jaws and of the studs are so shaped as to provide a ratcheting- action between them when the stud is moved axially-inwardly between the jaws, prior to a final rotary-movement of the stud which locks the stud and the jaws within the receptacle. The stud is releasable by rotary-movement in the reverse-direction, but is held captive on the panel 21 by a split-ring 56 which is engageable with grooves 55 and a terminal-washer 54 on the stud. In another arrangement, (Fig. 10, not shown), a modified form of cap is used and the jaws have interengaging-portions on their marginal-edges, which obviates the need for the guide-cylinder described above. In an alternative arrangement, (Figs. 11 and 12, not shown), the marginal-edges of the jaws are slotted to receive flat-keys. |
