[Also in Group XXIV] Lubricating and cooling oil can be removed from the housing of a multi-disc friction clutch at a greater rate than that at which it is supplied, in order to prevent drag when the clutch is disengaged. The clutch operates in an oil bath and comprises a driving housing 48 completely enclosing the clutch discs except for a restricted clearance 86 around a hub of a driven gear 40, the clearance allowing entry of oil into the clutch, from which it is evacuated centrifugally through bores 88 in the housing 48 at a rate sufficient to prevent drag when the clutch is disengaged. The clutch is engaged hydraulically by a piston 50, liquid being supplied through a bore 52 in a driving shaft 44, and is disengaged by a spring 72. Two such clutches 46, 54 are employed in a two-speed constant-mesh transmission for driving a winch reel 10, and when oil is supplied to engage either clutch it is also supplied to a servo cylinder 66 to release a spring-applied brake. The clutches couple gears 40, 42 to the driving shaft 44, these gears mesh a compound gear 38 geared to the reel 10. Lubricant for the bearings of gears 40, 42 is supplied through a bore 62.
