A filter for thickening sugar juices under pressure has a plurality of pivotally mounted filter plates disposed in star formation. In the Figures, the plates 5 are disposed around a rotatable shaft 3 which carries supports 4 and a collector plate 6. The plates 5 are held between the supports 4 by rotatably mounted collector tubes connected to the plate 6 by flexible ducts 7. A distributer head 8, which is fixed against rotation, has spaced ports communicating, through orifices in the plate 6, with the plates 5. The plates 5 are maintained in the radial direction by springs 17. The juice to be filtered enters the distributing pipe 24 under pressure and passes through the cloth covering the plates 5, the insoluble suspensions being deposited on the surfaces of the plates. Each plate 5 is successively brought into communication, through the ports in the head 8, with decreasing counter-pressures, simultaneously with the increase in thickness of the deposit. The deposit is stripped from the plate 5 by back-flushing filtrate, via a port in the head 8. The deposit falls into a hopper 9 having an agitator mounted on a shaft 10, which is provided with apertures 16 and is rotated so that the deposit passes several times through the apertures while being carried to the outlet 25. Decantations at the bottom of the tank 1 are returned to the hopper 9 by an arm 11 rotating on the shaft 3. During the back-flushing operation the plates are moved apart by engagement with the cam surface 12. Removal of the deposit may be aided by jolts imparted to the filter plates by a cam surface or may be aided by stripping strings which are stretched across the plates and carried in a frame which is moved vertically by a cam surface. The filter plates may be covered by a wide mesh net which strips the deposit by the relative movement between the net and the filter cloth when the latter is inflated by the internal counter pressure. |
