The invention relates to the use of the byproduct silicon tetrachloride, which forms as a byproduct during the manufacture of silicon or halogen silanes, for producing silicon, wherein the byproduct silicon tetrachloride is converted to silicon and metal chlorides using an elemental, metal reducing agent.
