The method involves mounting an electromechanical switching mechanism (21) in an upper region of a lower elevator car vertically below a weight (23) fastened to a run (24). The weight impinges on the electromechanical switching mechanism during an undesired approach of the two elevator cars. A safety circuit of the lower elevator car opened by the weight impinging on the switching mechanism is provided. A safety circuit of the upper elevator car opened by diminishing weight force is provided. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a safety equipment for an elevator (2) an elevator installation comprising an electromechanical switching mechanism.
