Embodiments are related to ionic liquids and more specifically to ionic liquids used in electrochemical metal-air cells in which the ionic liquid includes sulfonate ions as the anion.

A room temperature ionic liquid having a melting point at or below 100° C. at 1 atmosphere comprising an isethionate ion and a cation selected from the group consisting of 1-methyl-1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octanium, 1-ethyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium, N-ethyl-N-methylmorpholinium, 1-methylimimdazo[1,2-a]pyridinium, tetramethylammonium, and mixtures thereof.
