A bone filler material, comprising: at least one component adapted to expand at least a portion of the bone filler material thereby increasing the overall volume of the bone filler material. Suitable components are air and an open-cell foam object. The component may impart a performance defining characteristic to the expansion of the material. The bone filler material is suitable for use in decompressing a compression fracture, performing vertebroplasty, and performing kyphoplasty.
