There has been room for improvement in terms of increasing the life of display elements which have occurrences of irreversible bright point defects and black point defects and shortened lives of display elements when DMDs, which are reflective display devices, are used in high temperature environments such as being installed in vehicles. In the present invention, a display control means (92) displays a display image (D) in display elements (30). An illumination control means (91) drives various illumination means (11r, 11g) in each subframe (SF) into which a frame (F) of the display image (D) is temporally divided, by a field sequential system. The frame (F) is provided with a display period (Fa) in which the display image (D) is displayed in the display elements (30) by the display control means (92) normally driving a plurality of pixels and the illumination control means (91) driving the illumination means (11r, 11g) and a non-display period (Fb) in which the display image (D) is not displayed in the display elements (30) by the display control means (92) engaging in non-display period drive of the plurality of pixels and the illumination control means (91) turning off the illumination means (11r, 11g). |
