In the cracking of liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons, to form ethylene and (depending on the starting material) propylene, higher olefines, combustible gas, gasoline and oil coke, in a fluidized layer of granular inert or carbonaceous solid at 630-900 DEG C. and separating entrained solid in a cyclone, solid being returned through a down pipe, the cycle is kept free of deposits by introducing granular solid with the reaction and/or other gases to the inner upper boundary surface of the cyclone near the gas outlet pipe, the upper boundary surface being dome-shaped, frusto-conical or frusto-conical in stages inclining downwardly from the centre to the side so that the solid particles are forced against the inner upper surface by a component of the centrifugal force (see Group II). The fluidized solid may be sand, sillimanite, corundum or preferably coke and steam and steam and/or oxygen may be added during the cracking. If coke from the fluidized layer is passed to the cyclone preferably the coarser particles are separated and these only used. Sand, pumice, sillimanite, synthetic alumina stones or corundum may also be used alone or mixed with the coke. The solids may be suspended in the reaction gases or extraneous steam.ALSO:In the cracking of liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons, to form ethylene and (depending on the starting material) propylene, higher olefines, combustible gas, gasoline and oil coke, in a fluidized layer of granular inert or carbonaceous solid at 630-900 DEG C. and separating entrained solid in a cyclone, solid being returned through a down pipe, the cyclone is kept free of deposits by introducing granular solid with the reaction and/or other gases to the inner upper boundary surface of the cyclone near the gas outlet pipe, the upper boundary surface being dome-shaped, frusto-conical or frusto-conical in stage inclining downwardly from the centre to the side so that the solid particles are forced against the inner upper surface by a component of the centrifugal force (see Group II).
