Disclosed is a smart distribution transformer (201) that has a control system for controlling the load applied to the smart distribution transformer (201). The control system includes a monitoring module (107) adapted to monitor the operation of the smart distribution transformer (201) and develop an output based on the monitored operation. The control system also includes a control module adapted to wirelessly communicate with at least one smart communications device wherein the smart communications device is arranged to wirelessly communicate with at least one controllable device. The control module is further adapted to transmit a control signal to the smart communications device (105) to instruct the smart communications device (105) to connect or disconnect the controllable device based on the output of the monitoring module (107).
