The invention relates to mechanical transmissions for converting rotational motion into rotational or reciprocal motion using the toothed engagement of profiles, and can be applied to cylindrical, conical or planetary reduction gears and rack and pinion drives. One of the engaging profiles is in the form of a wheel (1) having at least two spiral teeth (2). The lateral working portions of the surface of each tooth are described in the principal cross-sections of this wheel by arcs of a circle (3) which is eccentrically offset from the centre of rotation of the wheel. The mating spiral teeth (6) of the second profile (5) are described in the same cross-sections by portions of the fronts of cycloidal curves (9, 10). The tips of the teeth (6) and the troughs therebetween can be of any shape that does not coincide with the teeth of the wheel (1).
