Provided are a settling tank of which the treated water quality is excellent, and which operates stably over a long period, and a method for operating said settling tank. This settling tank (1) has: a cylindrical tank body (2), the axial centre line of which is in the vertical direction; a distributor (10) disposed at the lower section (vicinity of the bottom section) of the interior of the tank body (2); a flow outlet (3) provided to a side surface section of the tank body (2), from the central section to a position slightly thereabove; a receiving tank (4) which is interconnected with the interior of the tank body (2) via the flow outlet (3); a stirring device (5) provided to the tank body (2); a treated water removal trough (6) provided to the upper section of the interior of the tank body (2); and a sludge discharge outlet (7) which removes concentrated sludge from the lower section of the receiving tank (4); and the like. A stirring body (5c) is disposed below the distributor (10).
