Provided in embodiments of the present invention are a method and router device for neighbor relationship processing. The method comprises: a first router device receives a packet transmitted by a second router device and for use in requesting for the establishment of a neighbor relationship; the first router device determines whether or not the first router device and the second router device are both not designated routers (DRother); and if the first router determines that the first router device and the second router device are both DRother, then the first router device discards the packet for use in requesting for the establishment of the neighbor relationship. Provided in the embodiments of the present invention, the method and router device for neighbor relationship processing, by means of discarding the packet for use in requesting for the establishment of the neighbor relationship when the first router device and the second router device are both DRother, reduce the number of neighbors maintained by the first router device and conserve the usage of system resources of the first router device such as CPU and memory.
