The present invention relates to a control system and method for STATCOM. The control system includes a desired value generating unit which generates a desired state (xd) of the STATCOM and a desired phase angle (αd); and a passivity-based control unit which generates a phase angel (α) which is a single control input by using the desired state (xd), the desired phase angle (αd), and an error (e) produced based on the desired state (xd).
