863,862. Ion-exchange membranes. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 29, 1958 [Nov. 20, 1957], No. 36115/57. Class 2(6). Ion-exchange membranes are prepared by absorbing styrene in granules of polyethylene or polypropylene, polymerizing the styrene therein by heating with a catalyst, forming the granules into film, and then treating with reagents which introduce ion-exchange groups into the polystyrene, the conditions being such that the carrier is unaffected. Catalysts specified are benzoyl peroxide and azo-di-isobutyronitrile. In an example a cation-exchange membrane containing sulphonic groups is obtained by the use of chlorosulphonic acid. Anion-exchange resins containing quaternary ammonium or amino groups may also be obtained. |
