[Also in Group XXX] Material to be composted is passed through a chamber in which the fermentation takes place while, at the same time, intercirculation is caused to take place in the mass. An apparatus, Figs. 2 and 4, for so doing comprises four chambers 10 arranged in tier form, each containing four rotary blade assemblies 26, 26a, which propel the material, fed in from hopper 4, successively through each chamber, passing from one chamber to the next through manually-operated trap doors 17 to the exit 16. The blades each carry a pair of diverging fins 27 to sweep the bottoms of the troughs 11. The flight portions in a single blade assembly may be varied in pitch so that the rate of travel varies along a trough, or the pitch of one or more assemblies may be reversed so as to provide the intercirculation of the material. To remove water from the entering material, the bottoms of the forward ends of the troughs 11 are perforated and trough-shaped screens 40 are recessed within the troughs, water being caught in pans 38 and discharged from duets 39. Air is introduced at duct 45 and circulates through the material via ducts 41, 43, 44 and 42 to exit ducts 47 and 48 (not shown).</p> |
