Safety element with multicoloured image

The element has a multi-colored image (20) visible in non-polarized light. Pixel elements (22) include metallic wire gratings (26-1 to 26-4), which produce color impression associated to the pixel elements in a phantom view and/or top view. The gratings include metal wires with a grating period of less than 1 micrometer. The wires include metal sections in height stages. A width of each metal section in each height stage is smaller than a width of an intermediate space between the metal sections. The gratings are embedded between a dielectric substrate and a dielectric superstrate. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for manufacturing a safety element (2) a method for authenticating a safety element.
