Class 100(2) Embossing apparatus for attachment to an envelope-making or like machine, comprises two rollers disposed one above the other, a removable collar on the lower roller having a recess therein,. and a second collar on the upper roller, the second collar having a boss thereon and a removable clip being mounted on the boss and having a resilient face thereon which engages in a recess on the first collar as material to be embossed passes between the rollers. As shown the machine has end members 3, 4 having slots 9, 10 in which bearing blocks 11, 12 are vertically slidable; a shaft 6 is journalled in the blocks 11, 12 and has spaced rolls 58, 59 mounted thereon so as to be laterally adjustable. A shaft 8 is journalled in fixed bearings 15 in the end members and is stepped so as to have portions 45, 42 of different diameters, a sleeve 46 of the same external diameter as the portion 42 being mounted on the portion 45. The portion 42 and the sleeve 46 have knurled surfaces which co-operate with the rolls 58, 59 to feed the web 76 of material to be embossed through the machine. A collar 51 is mounted on the shaft portion 45 between the sleeve 46 and the shaft portion 42. The collar 51 comprises two sections bolted together about the shaft 8, each section being engraved on its periphery with an intaglio design as at 56, Fig. 6. A collar 61 is mounted on the shaft 5 and has a boss 62 to which is secured by screws 68, 69 a flexible metal plate 64. The plate 64 carries, with an intervening lining of fabric, a resilient member 66 of rubber, plastic or the like which co-operates with the engraved designs on the collar 51 to force the material 76 into the latter and thus emboss it. The shafts 6, 8 are connected by gears 16, 17 having a ratio of 5:4 so that an embossment is effected at every other revolution of the collar 61. The upper roller assembly is urged downwards into contact with the lower roller assembly by springs 28 surrounding rods 26 which are secured to the bearing blocks 11, 12 and slidable in plates 24 at the tops of the end members 3, 4, nuts being provided on the threaded upper ends of the rods to allow adjustment of the pressure. Levers 31, 32 having cam portions 39 which engage washers 40 below the adjusting nuts on the rods 26, can be turned so as to raise the upper roller assembly out of contact with the lower. The collars 51, 61 and the sleeve 46 are all laterally adjustable on their respective shafts, and the collars may be adjusted angularly about their shafts in order to register the resilient member 66 with the engraved designs, for which purpose an alignment pin 75 is provided at the side of the boss 62. |
