A method of forming an array of projections 22 on a surface of a metallic component 21, the method including the steps of bringing at least one preformed projection 22 into at least close proximity to the surface of the component 21 and causing a portion of the projection and a portion of the component in the region of an intersection 29 thereof to at least partially melt, and causing them to be joined together. Electric welding, especially stud arc welding or resistance welding, is preferably used to join the projections 22 to the surface of the metallic component 21. A plurality of preformed projections 22 may be welded simultaneously to the component 21. The component comprising the array of projections is used in the manufacture of hybrid joints, more particularly to the manufacture of joints between parts made of differing materials, and most particularly to the manufacture of a metallic component comprising a plurality of preformed projections which penetrate composite fabric within a composite part (figures 1-5). |
