摘要 A surface treatment process for an implantable medical device 1 which has a dielectric insulating layer 3, the process comprises the application of ions 4 onto said dielectric insulating layer 3, the ions 4 being capable of forming an electrostatic charge and locally creating a local electric field associated with at least part of the surface of the implantable medical device 1 upon application of a liquid to said surface wherein said dielectric insulating layer 3 is provided on the surface of the implantable medical device 1 intermediate a metallic part of the implant 2 and a conductive fluid, wherein the dielectric insulating layer 3 comprises a metal oxide layer, and wherein the liquid is a conductive electrolyte solution, wherein an electric double layer builds up at the implant-liquid interface and wherein the ions are applied from a solution of MgCl26H2O. The method increases the hydrophilicity and wettability of an implant surface which increases the penetration of liquids and specific biomolecules, and therefore improves biocompatibility. The implantable medical device 1 is also claimed.
