The unit (10) has a printed circuit board (20) comprising a lighting unit (22) that is designed in the form of a LED. A light guiding unit (30) is provided for guiding light emitted by the lighting unit, and a housing (40) accommodates the printed circuit board and the guiding unit. The housing has a positioning unit (42) for positioning the guiding unit relative to the printed circuit board. The printed circuit board and the guiding unit are arranged symmetrically to the positioning unit. Extensions are formed at left and right ends of the guiding unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for mounting a lighting unit.
