A blood oxygenator comprises an envelope of flexible translucent material having an oxygenating chamber 23, a defoaming chamber 25, passages for the introduction of blood and oxygen and a tortuous outlet passage for removing free gas and oxygenated blood. Two sheets of polyvinyl chloride are heat-sealed together along side edges 15 and top edge 16 to form an envelope, along a vertical line 21 to define with one side edge 15 an oxygenating chamber 23 and along a transverse line 24a to form a defoaming chamber 25 at the top of the envelope. The oxygenating chamber 23 has in let conduits 11, 12 for venous blood and oxygen respectively. A vent 13 for free gas is provided for the defoaming chamber 25. A zig-zag passage defined by sealing along lines 24b-24g connects the bottom of the defoaming chamber 25 to a filter 14a and an outlet conduit 14. Projecting tongues 28 are sealed into the zig-zag passage, where it changes in direction, to slow down the passage of oxygenated blood and facilitate the escape of remaining free gas. When not in use, the conduits 11, 12, 14 are stored in a pocket 32 formed between the zig-zag passage and one sealed side of the envelope. In use, the bag is supported by a strap 17 sealed to the envelope or by a rod which is inserted between the top edge 16 of the envelope and a horizontal seal (not shown).
