The method involves supplying effluent stream (14) to a waste gas catalyst. The effluent stream is cleaned by the waste gas catalyst and exhausted from the waste gas catalyst. Different gas components of the effluent stream exhausted from the waste gas catalyst are detected by a sensor i.e. transverse-sensitive mixture potential sensor (17). The operation of the waste gas catalyst is monitored by acquisition of the gas components of the effluent stream exhausted from the waste gas catalyst when a starting temperature of the waste gas catalyst is relatively low. An independent claim is included for a control device for a motor car.
