Water-soluble, hydrophobically associated copolymer (I) comprising (a) at least one monoethylenically unsaturated, water-soluble surface active monomer, and (b) at least one monoethylenically unsaturated hydrophilic monomer (b) different from the monomer (a), is claimed, where during the preparation of (I), additionally (c) a non-polymerizable surfactant is used before the initiation of the polymerization reaction. An independent claim is included for a process for preparing (I) comprising subjecting (a) and (b) to an aqueous solution polymerization in the presence of (c). |
